FAQ
Taiwan Health MCP — Frequently asked questions
Taiwan Health MCP lets AI agents understand Taiwan healthcare: an open-source MCP server for FHIR Box, TW Core IG and Taiwan terminology. These are the questions developers, TSP engineers and hospital IT teams ask most.
01What is Taiwan Health MCP, and how does it relate to FHIR Box?
Taiwan Health MCP is an open-source (MIT) Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. MCP is the open protocol AI agents use to call external tools in a uniform way. It exposes 63 tools in 12 groups covering TFDA drugs, ICD-10, SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm and FHIR IGs such as TW Core. FHIR Box is a hospital-side FHIR server: once an admin registers it as an external FHIR server, agents can read from it through tools like list_fhir_servers and crud_fhir_server, and author and validate resources against TW Core profiles.
02Is it a FHIR server?
No. Taiwan Health MCP does not store clinical resources. It is the AI layer in front of FHIR servers: terminology lookup, IG profile and ValueSet queries, skeleton-fill authoring and validation (aligned with HL7 validator_cli 7.0.1), and deterministic, non-LLM grounding checks. To read or write records it relays through crud_fhir_server to an admin-registered external FHIR server; writes must be allowed by that server's allow-list and the caller must pass confirm_write=true.
03Is it free? How does pricing work?
The code is MIT-licensed. The Community edition is free to self-host forever, with no usage limits; for development you can start it with docker compose on your own machine or server. A hosted service operated by us is coming soon — join the waitlist through the contact form. Enterprise support (for example OAuth / SSO, audit logs and on-premises hospital rollout) is quoted per deployment — email support@healthymind-tech.com.
04Which AI clients are supported?
Any client that speaks MCP streamable-http, including Claude Desktop, Claude Code (claude mcp add taiwan-health https://tw-health-mcp.healthymind-tech.com/mcp), Cursor, and Open WebUI v0.6.31+ MCP connections. Clients that only support OpenAPI tool servers can use the OpenAPI bridge instead: /openapi.json plus POST /tools/<tool-name>. Both interfaces call the same tools.
05What are the data sources and versions? How is SNOMED CT licensing handled?
ICD-10-CM / PCS uses the full CMS 2026-04-01 code set and LOINC is version 2.80, alongside SNOMED CT International, RxNorm, FHIR IGs such as TW Core, and Taiwan FDA open data. ICD-10, LOINC, SNOMED CT and RxNorm source files are obtained by the operator and uploaded through the admin console; the project does not redistribute them, so SNOMED CT and similar licences are the operator's own. Module load status is visible in the admin console.
06Does it store patient data?
No. The server collects no personal data. Audit records keep only the tool name, a SHA-256 hash of the parameters, duration and status; raw parameters are never logged, so queries cannot be reconstructed from the audit trail. The one exception is crud_fhir_server, which relays caller-supplied data to an admin-registered external FHIR server without retaining it. See the Privacy Policy and the Data Processing Addendum.
07Can it run offline inside a hospital?
Yes. docker compose starts every component on one host — nginx gateway, MCP server, admin console, background worker, PostgreSQL 16 with pgvector, pgBouncer, Redis and MinIO — with no cloud dependency. Terminology source files and FHIR IG packages (package.tgz) can be uploaded through the admin console, and semantic search uses a local Ollama embedding model, falling back to keyword search when embeddings are missing.
08What is the difference between the MCP and OpenAPI endpoints?
They expose the same tools. /mcp is the MCP streamable-http endpoint for native MCP clients, which handshake and then list tools. /openapi.json is an OpenAPI 3.1 spec generated from the currently enabled tools, with one POST /tools/<tool-name> per tool. Self-hosted installs default to no authentication, which suits trusted networks only; for public exposure a bearer token can be required on all three endpoints.
09Can TSP engineers use it to prepare for Taiwan's certification lab tests?
It is useful for practising the underlying skills: looking up and mapping codes with the SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm and ICD-10 tools, and querying, filling and validating TW Core profiles with the FHIR IG tools. It is not an official exam tool and does not guarantee a pass; the Ministry of Health and Welfare certification lab's announcements are the authority on scope and rules.
10How can I contribute or report an issue?
The source is on GitHub (https://github.com/healthymind-tech/Taiwan-Health-MCP). Open an issue for bugs or feature requests, or send a pull request; coding conventions and tests are described on the Contributing page of the docs site.
